Our industry has a love/hate relationship with overdraft (OD) fees. For some banks, OD fees compose their largest source of fee income, and the revenue stream is central to their success. To put this in perspective, for our nation’s top 600 banks, OD fees composed 8% of total revenue, or over $11.6T annually. For other banks, OD fees cause a constant stream of customer complaints, regulatory scrutiny, and reputational risk. Over the last several years, community banks have gotten better and making improvements in their OD program and supporting the effort with education.
